This month’s CGC Featured Registry set is DC Comics Presents from CGC Registry member JMoses. This user has collected nearly the entire series run in fantastic high-grade, earning their “JMosesDCCP” collection the Best in Set Type Award for eight consecutive years (2015-2022).

DC Comics Presents was a fun team-up series that would pair Superman with another character each month, similar to DC’s more popular Brave and Bold series that teamed heroes with Batman. While only running 97 issues (plus four Annuals) between 1978 and 1986, this was a surprisingly good series that introduced a lot of key issues.

The series began with Superman and Flash in issues #1-2, fighting Reverse Flash in the future. Issue #26 teamed Superman with Green Lantern and famously introduced the New Teen Titans with the first appearance of Cyborg, Starfire and Raven. Issue #27 paired Superman and the Martian Manhunter, and it was the first appearance of the Superman villain Mongul and the battle planet War World. Issue #41 forced Superman to work alongside the Joker.

Issue #47 may be the most valuable of the series, including the first appearance of He-Man and Skeletor (the license has been passed around a lot over the years between DC, Marvel, Image and Dark Horse). A copy graded CGC 9.8 was sold for $3,999 in 2021. There was also a preview of Masters of the Universe in DC Comics Presents #50, in which Superman was paired with the Atom.

Issue #52 saw Superman fighting alongside the Doom Patrol, and it was the first appearance of Ambush Bug (who later returned to team up in issue #81). Issue #67 saw Superman and Santa Claus working together to save Christmas from the Toyman. Issue #84 was Superman and the Challengers of the Unknown, featuring the last artwork Jack Kirby ever did for DC Comics. Issue #85 put together Superman and Swamp Thing for one of writer Alan Moore’s earliest DC jobs. Issue #87 was Superman and Superboy, and the first appearance of Superboy-Prime, who played a large role in future DC crises.

“My primary collecting interests involve DC Comics from the 70s forward, which naturally coincides with the time I as a kid became interested in these comics,” JMoses said on the CGC Registry page. “Some of my favorites are Mister Miracle and the entire Fourth World concept; Superman, especially the short series', the one-shots, the Weekly issues, and John Byrne's issues; and Denny O'Neil's work on The Question.”
