CGC-graded Superman and Spider-Man Lead Upcoming Heritage Sale

Posted on 27/12/2022

Bids for the first issue of Superman and the first appearance of Spider-Man have each already topped $300,000.

The first issue of Superman and the first appearance of Spider-Man, each graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®), are expected to top Heritage Auctions’ Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction, scheduled for January 15, 2023.

With several weeks left in the auction, a Superman #1 with the Nova Scotia Pedigree graded CGC 5.0 (lot 91041) has already surpassed a quarter-million dollars. Among the most iconic superheroes, Superman is responsible for launching an industry when he first appeared in Action Comics #1 in 1938. After his debut, DC decided to give Superman his own title, another first for the burgeoning comic industry. Superman #1 hit the stands in the summer of 1939 and instantly sold out, proving the star power of the superhero.

The Nova Scotia collection consisted of two parts; a small run of Golden Age DC's from the late 1930s to early '40s, and another group of nearly 2,000 comics from the early 1950s to the late '60s. The collection was part of an estate sale in 1994 that sold for $85,000.

Also expected to do well is an Amazing Fantasy #15 graded CGC 9.2 (lot 91024) that already has bidding in excess of $200,000. This comic was published by Marvel Comics in 1962 and is famous for the first appearance of Spider-Man, by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. The character was an immediate hit with fans, and Marvel rushed him into his own monthly series, beginning with The Amazing Spider-Man #1 in 1963.
