CGC-graded More Fun Comics #52 Sells for a Record $264,000

Meanwhile, a Captain America Comics #1 certified by CGC sold for $194,000 in Heritage Auctions' December sale.

A comic book graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) that features the first appearance of the Spectre claimed a new sales record in the Comics and Comic Art Signature Auction presented by Heritage Auctions on December 11, 2022.

The new record was set by a More Fun Comics #52 graded CGC 8.5 (lot 92134) that realized $264,000. Published by DC Comics in 1940, this comic features the first appearance and origin of the Spectre, from Superman co-creator Jerry Siegel along with artist Bernard Baily. The character is police officer Jim Corrigan, who is murdered and whose spirit is sent back to eliminate evil from the world. In 1942, the Spectre would become a founding member of the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in All-Star Comics #3.

Also finishing strong was a Captain America Comics #1 graded CGC 4.5 (lot 92054) that realized $194,400. Published in 1941 by Timely Comics, Captain America Comics #1 features the first appearance of Captain America, by creators Jack Kirby and Joe Simon. This Golden Age title recently joined the million-dollar club when a CGC 9.4 copy sold for $3.12 million in April 2022.
