Another CGC-certified Batman Comic Will Achieve Seven Figures

Posted on 14/09/2021

The Batman #1 graded CGC 8.0 has already surpassed $1 million in an upcoming sale.

A Batman #1 graded by Certified Guaranty Company® (CGC®) has already surpassed $1 million in a Goldin Auction sale that wraps up on September 18, 2021. It would be the fifth CGC-certified comic book to sell for over $1 million this year, including a high-grade Amazing Fantasy #15 that just set a record for any comic book by realizing $3.6 million on September 9.

The million-dollar bat

Graded CGC 8.0, this example of Batman #1 is one of the highest graded by CGC in Universal grade. It is pedigreed to the collection of Lamont Larson, who amassed hundreds of issues that date from 1935 to 1941, when the Golden Age of comic books began.

The Spring 1940 book not only features the next adventure in the Dark Knight’s legacy, but it also includes the first appearances of infamous villains Joker and Catwoman. Another Batman #1 example, that one graded CGC 9.4, realized $2.22 million at a sale in January, the first of the CGC-certified comic books to realize over $1 million this year.

The comic book market is showing a voracious appetite for CGC-certified rarities. In June, a bidder paid $1.12 million for a copy of the May 1939 comic book that introduced Batman: Detective Comics #27. Its grade of CGC 5.0 puts it in the middle of the pack of less than 40 total that CGC has certified in Universal Grade.
